Episode 8 - What to spin?

Shownote links are essentially the same as last week so just scroll down to the last entry to see them.

The winner of what colorway I will be spinning next is Twist & Shout! Thanks to everyone who voted!

  1. Hi Carin! Love the new show :) It sounds like you spin worsted, with the short forward draw (inch-worm).

My first pair of socks weren't even in sock yarn, they were WOTA with a short row heel. Some mock cable rib thing from the first Schurch sock book. Scary, but they were socks!

  2. Another great show :-) :-) I knit my first pair of socks about 4-5 years ago and I had them until recently when one of my dogs, they wont tell me who, put a hole in it...they have since left to sock heaven :-(

  3. I can't access YouTube at work, so I'll have to wait until I get home to see this episode. I can't wait!

  4. Hey, Pfau is pronouced perfectly, so go ahead saying the German name ;) But why Opal is calling it Pfau is beyond me. Do you think it resembles a peacock?

My first knitting disaster was my first cardigan. I was around 12 or so and gauge was an unknown concept ;) I pregnant XXXXL lady would have fit into it, since I used a bulky weight and they used sport weight ;)

  5. "Pfau" - you spoke that right :-)

I usually knit 20 rounds of ribbing, but that is up to every knitter.

Why do you keep socks that do not fit??? OK, that first pair I get, but the second? Go find someone with narrow feet!

  6. Loved the episode.

Ok my first sweater - Norwegian patterned sweater out of worsted weight Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride = waaaay too hot to ever wear. Someone had told me to twist the yarns together (not necessary in stranding!) so I ended up with a big tangled mess. Took me 10 freakin years to finish it because I kept getting frustrated. The best part...EVERY stitch was knit tbl.

  7. What a nice way to start October! Even though the video casts are 'short', I don't feel like I missing out on anything because I can see what you're knitting, live!

My first pair of socks were made out of worsted weight, and were gifted to a friend. I knit them out of 100% acrylic, with Denise needles. It almost killed my sock knitting career.

Then, there was the Lion Brand fun fur & chenille striped scarves.....

  8. my first sock never got a mate (techincally finished after the second sock I ever cast on), and was knitted with worsted wt. toe up...
I have wide feet and even on my foot the sock was huge sloopy.

My second attempt wasn't much better and apparently a sign to stop making worsted socks. This one(also never received a mate) was for my daughter, cuff down from a lion brand pattern and I totally messed up the heel making it only part way and skipping over the pick up for the short row... wow it was too short and lumpy looking so now the mishappened thing is my camera cozy.

  9. My first pair of socks was from a flyer in WalMart and they were called Dorm Socks. I was so excited. I believe they called for worsted weight. It was the first time I was successful figuring out the heel. After that, I tackled a pair with sock yarn and they were swell.

  10. My first "real" knitting project was a hat. I bought this Tuscan colored yarn without looking at the fiber content or dye pattern. It ended up being the worst bit of pooling stretched out cotton I've ever knit. The classic roll brim hat made me look like one of Fat Albert's friends - the one with the eye holed in his hat because it hangs down so low! It is awful.

But I can't throw it away.

GREAT episode! My most favorite yet.

  11. Great episode! Can't wait to see what you do with all your crocheted hexagons!

The first time I tried intarsia I tangled the yarns so bad they never got untangled...it would have been better to just set fire to it in the back yard...I have a better system now ;)

  12. My first knitting project was a knitted tam, from the old (1960s) green Coats & Clark Learn to Knit book. The only yarn available to me at that time was Red Heart, and since I couldn't decide which color I wanted, my mother made me get the bright variegated one, can't remember the name. It was a good pattern to learn inc's and dec's, ribbing and finishing. Don't know what happened to the hat though, probably frogged it and reused the yarn for something else, like a blanket for my wiener dog.

  13. My first socks had the opposite problem. I used Socks that Rock Mediumweight, size 3 (us) needles, and 68 STITCHES.
They're huge, but like you I can't get rid of them. Also, DH put them in the laudndry and they became VERY FLUFFY inside, so now they're more like slippers.

  14. I knit my first socks a couple years ago, from a Knitting Pure & Simple pattern, and some Lorna's Laces I won on a knitting blog. They're not perfect but they actually fit fine, amazingly!

  15. My first socks ever were the Baudelaires by Cookie A, in Koigu KPM in shade 1000, Sunshiney yellow. They ended up being a present for my mom (who now receives ALL of my knitted socks)

I didn't have any issues with that first pair, because they were toe-up. (yeah...only one attempt at cuff down socks, the Cachoeira pattern from Knitty...which are now hibernating!)

Great job on the Christmas knitting! I promised myself I would start on that in September, and here we are in the first week of October, where all I've done is queued the patterns. *sigh*

  17. My first sock fell victim to SSS, yep it doesn't have a mate. I really didn't like the colorway so I never got around to finishing it. Also I only knit 2 at a time since the first sock, so all of my socks have a mate.
